27 Jan Don’t do This While on a Forklift…

We oftentimes talk about forklift safety, and the benefits of training. And in any discussion about forklifts employee safety should always be the number one consideration, because forklifts are large, potentially dangerous machines that can at the very least do damage merchandise, or catastrophically harm and possibly even kill forklift operators or pedestrians. Here are a few no-no’s when it comes to handling a forklift…

Never, ever should a forklift operator skip their inspection. Every day before a forklift is put into service it should be inspected. During inspection operators should perform both a visual inspection and operational inspection. During the visual inspection, a well-trained operator should look over the machine, checking for obvious signs of wear and tear, damage, etc. When the operator has completed their visual inspection, the next step is to turn on the machine and make sure that the brakes, handling, controls, lights and alarms and other safety-related accessories are working properly. Skip any of these steps and the operator risks a potential breakdown which could have catastrophic results.

It’s also important that forklift operators drive a speed appropriate to the warehouse and the machine. Drive the machine too fast and run the risk of doing damage to the warehouse or goods, or possibly any pedestrians. High speeds can also contribute to unstable machinery and the possibility of turning over or flipping. Speed erodes situational awareness. Situational awareness is an important trait for a forklift operator to develop. An operator should check what’s behind them before moving, signal before turning, use safety accessories when appropriate, etc.

And the number one biggest mistake is to engage in any kind of horseplay. The forklift is an effective tool for work, and should never be used as anything other.
