07 Apr Pick the Right Machine: How to Choose a Forklift Based on Spec.

Forklifts are not a one-size-suits-all type of machine. And, yes, it is true that warehouse requirements will dictate the type of Forklift needed. And if you don’t know where to begin, it’s important to discuss your warehouse’s layout with your Forklift expert at Anderson Forklift to determine the correct type and size, etc. But to get you started, here are a few ideas.

Type of Fuel

Forklifts operate with either an electric—battery powered—or fuel-powered engine. And that one spec right there might be enough to get you started: electric Forklifts are required in any indoor warehouse where food or food products are stored. Also, if you have an indoor facility without food storage, and you will require the machine to move extremely heavy loads, you may want a fuel-powered Forklift to move all that weight around.

Aisle Size

When we speak about Forklifts and Forklift safety, aisle size is always a prevalent topic. While a Forklift operator may be able to operate an oversized-forklift within the aisle space, it doesn’t mean that that oversized-forklift is the correct size for the warehouse; a Forklift is much more efficient when it’s well-suited to the size requirements of the warehouse in which it operates. Also, if your warehouse facility has two different aisle size/height requirements, it may be important to purchase two different machines. Remember to consider the area above the Forklift as well. (What are the height requirements at your warehouse?) If the machine is to be used outside, then you will have to purchase a machine with tires that perform on outdoor surfaces; an outdoor machine will also likely run on fuel.

Knowing how to Spec a Forklift in accordance with your own businesses needs is important—it will save you money to know the limits of your warehouse. Paying for too big a machine can be costly and decrease your warehouse’s efficiency. And remember, speak with the Forklift experts at Anderson Forklift, because it’s the number one way to ensure that you’re buying the best machine.
